I know it’s all grainy and such, but you have to trust me how absolutely cool it is to see the glow at night coming from the Halemaumau Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. This is viewable from the overlook at the Jaggar Museum, just a short drive from the park’s entrance.
During the day, it looks like this…
It’s hard to believe all that glowing is going on when you see it during the light of day, eh?
Our group did quite a bit of hiking around the park. And we had perfect weather for it (while the rest of Hawaii was getting hammered by rain and hail!).
Probably one of the most dramatic and beautiful sights for me was the south coastline, where this sea arch is located. We arrived late in the afternoon and the tide was strong, crashing big against the rocks. I was mesmerized.
Our group spent the day with Hawaii Forest & Trails on their Kilauea Volcano Adventure to tour all these sights. Our guide, Taj, was spectacular. He was enthusiastic and able to explain what we were seeing in plain English (well sometimes in plain Hawaiian, but then he’d translate). Jon and I traveled through this area on our own last year and didn’t see 1/4 of what we did on this tour and learned little other than a few facts.
A full-day tour like this can last up to 12 hours and the cost is about $180, including breakfast and lunch. It’s well worth it.
One of the best things about being with a group is the fast friendships that are formed. This was our group of travel writers, photographers and hosts. Thanks Hawaii Island for hosting us and making sure the weather was so perfect!
Travel Well,
Beth

That’s amazing!! Hawaii has always been on my bucket list, as well as vising a volcano! Way to kill two birds with one stone!
Brings back some great memories! Been a while since my last visit to Hawaii. Have you had a chance to snorkel or go whale watching? I swam with giant sea turtles my last visit. Years ago now…
Thanks for sharing!
I can only imagine how cool it was to see the red glow.
Happy Adventures!

Volcanos is an awesome park. Where else can you stand next to flowing lava?
I am heading to Maui, Molokai and Lanai next month but not the big island, I hope the volcanoes on the other islands are as impressive.
I’ve always wanted to do this! Looks totally cool… and hot:)
