The Mountain Khakis Cabin Duffel is a heavy-duty canvas bag that harkens back to the days of olde time travel, when your only option to fly was in a prop plane.
But it’s so indestructible that it could come out unscathed in today’s rough handling of luggage (if you were so inclined to check it).
It’s made of 20 oz canvas and then reinforced with waxed canvas – making it water resistant. The bottom is leather, providing even more protection to the elements and rough handling.
I took this on an overnight getaway recently. Somehow I do manage to pack more for a brief staycation than I do for longer trips simply because I can. I loaded this up with not only a change of clothes and some nighties but with a week’s worth of projects to do in my brief downtime. That is, when I wasn’t staring into a fire or soaking in the jacuzzi. Even with all that I packed, there was still plenty of room left for Jon’s clothes.
The Mountain Khakis Duffel has an adjustable (and removable) should strap with a leather pad for your shoulder. It’s also got handles on top for easy moving around. There’s an outside slip pocket and a removable interior “organizational” panel (which I haven’t yet found use for).
The zippered top is most interesting because it’s reinforced with a jaw-like opening. Meaning that it’s not pliable. When it’s open, it stays open and when it’s zippered shut, it closes up tight and remains stiff (unlike that duffel bag you bring to the gym that folds up once you throw it over your shoulder). This photo is a good illustration of the stiff opening it provides.
Comes in Dark Olive and Yellowstone.
What I Love
- Absolutely sturdy – I trust this will never rip
- Large enough to carry everything I’d need for a 2 or 3 night getaway
- Adjustable shoulder strap (believe it or not, I’ve reviewed a pretty cool duffel without a shoulder strap – what a pain to carry!)
Not So Much
- This is big for a duffel. I’m not likely to take it on an overnight getaway again – it’s just a tad too big for that.
- Would love to have one interior zippered or mesh pocket to stash smaller items
- I found the zippered top just slightly difficult to open and shut because of the reinforced closure
All in all, this is a super duper bag. It’s a bit pricey ($225 on Amazon) but you can be assured you’ll never need another duffel bag in your lifetime.
