John Hardy is a jewelry designer living in the idyllic community of Ubud, Bali. Creating silver pieces from recycled metals, he’s created a multi-million dollar business and a silver factory that employs local workers including the artisans. His philosophy is to create sustainable luxury, both in the jewelry he makes and the environment in which he lives.
But John Hardy isn’t creating cheap silver for backpacking travelers. His work sells for upwards of $1,000 each. The jewelry can be purchased in stores such as Neiman Marcus. Not bad for a hippie who landed on the island in the ’70’s.
Over the last 30 years, he’s created a work environment that includes organic gardens, bamboo and buildings made of recycled mud brick. And within the walls of his factory, hundreds of factory workers share lunch together.
One of his latest collections includes silver pieces that resemble bamboo. For each piece sold, more bamboo will be planted on the island of Nusa Penida, an island that is nearly deforested. Prices for these pieces range from $150-$850.
While I go nuts for silver, I may have to do my part by planting some bamboo in my own yard. Neiman Marcus will have to wait.
Happy Travels!
