On my recent visit to the Bay Area, I took along the San Francisco Food Lover’s Pocket Guide. This was a great little resource for trying to determine where to begin a culinary exploration in a city that’s known for its food.
Luckily, my time in San Fran was somewhat restricted. I say luckily because if I had a wide open schedule I would surely have spent my time wandering from cafe to restaurant to bakery – a dangerous proposition for any gal watching her girlish figure!
The book is broken down into neighborhoods and then within the ‘hoods it includes listings for restaurants, cafes, bars, delis, bakeries, ice cream/chocolates, markets, produce, meat & poultry, fish, cheese and finally cookware and books. This makes it easy to determine where you can find what depending on your mood, budget and appetite.
Not only is this a great resource for making a decision about where to eat but I used this as a reference when a friend invited me out to lunch. I was able to check out the area where she works and then when she made restaurant suggestions I had some knowledge about where we might go. (By the way, this was down by the Embarcadero Center. The Slanted Door was packed so we ended up at the Hog Island Oyster Bar where they also serve a killer grilled cheese sandwich.)
The book is small and can easily fit into a purse. It’s also reasonably priced at $11.95.
Happy Travels!
