Not only do solo travelers often get charged a single supplement fee (to make up for loss of a double occupancy fare) on tours and cruises, some cruises are now charging additional port fees for singles.
These port fees are charged by the cruise line itself (not by the local government) and are miscellaneous fees that may include charges for port services such as shore power and ground labor. Cruise lines have the ability to set these fees as they wish and varies between cruise lines. Norwegian Cruise Lines doubles this fee while others charge a percentage that’s based on their single supplement fee.
SoloCruiser.com provides extensive info on cruises offering low single supplement fees as well as info on themed solo cruises and those for 55+ travelers.
Wherever your cruise (or tour) takes you, be sure to ask about all additional fees up front so you don’t get caught unaware of those charges that could easily add up to hundreds of dollars!
Happy Travels!
