Oprah’s O Magazine recently got behind a project to help women in Zambia and Rwanda affected by AIDS. These women are creating hand-beaded bracelets that are now being sold exclusively at Macy’s. One hundred percent of the profits go to the women creating the jewels, which nets them between $5 and $19 a day (far more than the typical $1 a day they might make doing other work).
The bracelets are designed by Mary Fisher, who was diagnosed with HIV herself in the early 90’s. Since her diagnosis, she has spent a tremendous amount of time working with AIDS patients in Africa and travels around the world to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.
For the O Bracelet project, Mary and her team, including those from Fair Winds Trading, have trained the women to make the bracelets which range in price from $35 to $135. All partners involved in the project are participating without compensation to ensure as much profit as possible goes to the women in Africa. Limited quantities of these bangles are available so don’t wait to pick yours up.
Happy Travels!
