One of the most relaxing vacations that Jon and I have ever taken was to Costa Rica. It wasn’t the fact that we were there for 3 weeks that made it such a wonderful vacation, it was the fact that we were so checked-out. To my recollection, we did not have cell phones with us and we only checked email 2 or 3 times. And this was just a few years ago.
I find myself longing for another vacation like that – where I can just check out for an extended period of time. I don’t have to be planted poolside with an exotic drink, I would just like to not think for a few days π
The above photo was taken at Poas Volcano, located centrally in Costa Rica and not far from San Jose (in other words, an easy place to visit if you’re flying into SJ).
This is the elusive Quetzal, Costa Rica’s national bird. It’s quite unusual to see one of these, but with an experienced guide and some good timing, we caught a glimpse of one in the Monteverde Cloud Forest.
At 40, I took my first surf lesson. That’s Jon on the left, not with the dreadlocks π

OK, you tipped the scale with that first image. Costa Rica is on my list already. Have a friend that worked there and some contacts. Maybe winter 2011, as I’m going to South Africa March 2010.
The Quetzal is awesome.
Not so sure about learning to surf.

Don’t go in winter ! It sucks here in Jan/Feb.
come in May or June to really enjoy the lushness.

Good catch on the bird. Not an easy shot to get.

I’m with you in longing for a vacation where we can just “check out”! That may be why we love going up to Northern Michigan so much…it’s familiar, you can do as much or as little as you like and the pace is a little slower the further away from the big cities you get π

Wow…I know others have already said it, but those photos are absolutely gorgeous. I’m so jealous!
I also love holidays where you can almost totally forget about your life at home, staying connected as so on. It’s so relaxing and I think it helps me stay grounded and reminded of what is important.
Like the blog – congrats on the shortlisting!
