Saturday, March 8 is a big day for women.
Not only is it International Women’s Day but it’s also the inaugural Women’s Travel Fest event in New York City.
Here’s what you should know about both:
International Women’s Day
I was amazed to learn that International Women’s Day was first observed in the early 1900s. Women were demanding better pay and voting rights (voting rights, can you imagine?) and marched in New York City fighting for equal treatment.
It’s grown into a global event and an official holiday in the most curious of places, including Afghanistan, China (for women only), Cuba, Moldova and Zambia, among others.
More than 1,200 events are listed on the IWD website which are searchable by country and then by city. So where ever you are, there’s a chance you can attend an event near you.
Women’s Travel Fest
This, of course, is the best event of all.
Travel. Women. Can I get a whoop whoop?!
This one day event was created to help empower and inspire women to travel. Some of the biggest names in women’s travel will be speaking at this event including Samantha Brown and Sarah Shourd. And, I’ll be there speaking with my colleagues at the Expedia Viewfinder blog including Sarah Gavin, Carol Cain and Kate Thomas.
I’m genuinely honored to be part of this group of esteemed ladies but it just hit me in the past few days how really excited I am to meet many of the speakers in person for the first time and to hear what they all have to say during the day of workshops.
The event is now sold out but I hope if you’re going you’ll come by and say hello.
And if you’re not able to make it to NYC, let me know where you will be and what you’ll be doing to celebrate Girl Power!
Travel Well!
