Thanks to everyone who piped up about what camera I should carry on my upcoming trip to India.
I spent a half day at Fry’s and Best Buy chatting with the knowledgeable salesmen about my options. Unfortunately, as so often happens, the most knowledgeable guy (at Best Buy) also confused the heck out of me. I was wavering between the Canon G9 point and shoot and the Nikon 40Dx SLR. I left convinced that I shouldn’t buy either one. The larger, multi-lens Nikon would have been too much equipment for me to carry around and the Canon point and shoot wouldn’t do much more than my tiny, and I mean tiny, Casio Exilim.
On the drive home, I started considering a small video camera.
And I’m now the proud owner of the Sanyo Xacti HD1000. It’s compact, takes SD cards (just like the Exilim) and will serve more purposes in the long run as I’d like to start shooting and editing some video for this site. How cool will that be?
I used to own a crazy amount of SLR photography equipment. I had a Canon body and multiple lenses including a 300mm image stabilizer lens. I gave all that up years ago after a trip to Rome in August when it was 90 degrees and I was lugging around a bunch of gear that was too cumbersome and uncomfortable given the temperature. I couldn’t bring myself to start ramping up to that again with the Nikon 40Dx.
I’m really glad to have this little handy shooter with me for India. Keep your eyes open for some cool video shot by moi on this very site.
Happy Travels!

Beth, you made the right choice. I can’t wait to see that little devil when you visit NJ. I’ll plan to shoot to wherever you are. I found that my new Canon Rebel XT, though a wonderful camera, was too much to lug around with a backpack and extra lenses. I ended up borrowing a friend’s camera once I left Myanmar and having him take mine home with him. As you know, it really is hard to downsize once you’re used to the quality of all those fancy lenses. But I also feel that the small cameras are less obtrusive and at least make me feel that I’m not standing out like a sore thumb. I know I’m kidding myself, but it sure is more convenient.
Have a great time with your exauisite new “toy.”
