I love looong walks and often take them in my neighborhood to get exercise and to run errands. Our neighbors all think Jon and I are crazy because they see us out and about in all kinds of weather. I know relatively well how far my walks take me – .6 miles to the post office (which I visit about 5 times a week) and 1.2 miles to the grocery store.
When I’m on the road, however, it’s always hard for me to determine just how much of my usual walking I’m getting in.
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been testing out the Tech4o Accelerator Watch that includes a pedometer for just this purpose. While it hasn’t accelerated my speed, there is a pedometer built into it and it’s been fun to count the number of steps I take on one of regular walking routes.
I discovered, for example, that one of my usual walks…. west and south to the post office, north to the grocery store(s) and then east back home – is about 3.5 miles at 7,500 steps. This info will come in handy in my travels as I’m out trekking in the mountains of northern Vietnam or the Himalayas of Cambodia. Just how close to I come to the matching (or exceeding) the walks I do at home?
The watch features technology that can be adjusted to your body’s walking style, therefore making it highly accurate. In theory, even more accurate than a mechanical pedometer that measures the number of strides as it sits on your hip. I’ve tested this myself – counting the number of steps I do with what actually shows up on the watch and it is pretty darn close.
- It’s convenient because you don’t have to wear a pedometer on your hip or shoe to track your steps either on your walks or runs.
- It comes in feminine colors – as silly as that might sound, it’s nice to have a gadget that doesn’t look like a bulky boy toy.
- 95% accurate on its calculations
Cons:
- The watch is just a bit bigger than I’d like for my wrist. I have thin wrists and hands and I feel like it’s a bit bulky.
- The website says that the watch is easy to set up – at just a touch of the button right out of the box – but I spent about 15 frustrated minutes trying to get it set up. Once it’s set up, however, you don’t need to make changes to it.
The price is not bad at under $70. Available on Amazon
