Guest post from dog lover, Georgia Congleton
I recently had the fun job of trying out a luggage product for my dog – yes, for my dog, Elsie! I had never given a thought to having luggage for my dog and my first thought was, “What a very yuppie item – the K-9 Cube by Mountainsmith“. But now that I’ve used this, I found a few of its features charming – and in some cases fantastic. The K-9 Cube comes equipped with:
- food storage bag
- food dish
- water dish
- Frisbee (Elsie’s first introduction to this toy!)
The K-9 Cube consists of a larger zip-top main bag, 15″ x 15″ v 7.5″. The main compartment of the larger bag has a removable Velcro divider in order to accommodate your specific needs. The front of this main unit zips open and folds down to form a dining tray. The two collapsible dishes velcro in place to keep your dog from chasing the water bowl all over the campsite – or even your mother-in-law’s laundry room.
The back of the main unit zips open to reveal a storage area perfect for carrying flat items, such as a towel if your dog is a swimmer. This pocket is where the poly-fabric Frisbee comes stowed. What a fun, added bonus that Elsie completely digs.
The K-9 Cube, though made by Mountainsmith, is not for backpacking, but the collapsible dishes are perfect to grab and stash in your pack so you and the pup can hit the trail – or the park. The cynch-top food dish keeps the food in place while you’re on the go; and the water-proof lined drinking dish cleans up nicely.
The dishes may be my favorite features. The sides of the water dish are tall enough so when my 90-pound gentle giant takes a drink she doesn’t slop water all over everything, and it has a PEVA lining, which is a chlorine-free vinyl. The cynch-top food dish keeps the kibble in the dish and not at the bottom of your pack without having to carry around a bunch of plastic bags – at least not for this purpose 🙂
The whole product is heavy and a bit cumbersome to haul around. But, it is perfect for car camping or basic, day-to-day dog trips. It is well-constructed out of 150d Ripstop Poly fabric and built to take the rigors of living with a large dog, such as my lab.
It was fun being introduced to the world of what I initially thought to be “doggy indulgence”. I learned that this may not be that much of an indulgence as it actually made life a bit easier as I hit the road with my pet.
