It’s a little embarrassing to admit but the first thing I usually do when I get a new backpack is to cut the waist straps off and then the straps that are supposed to come across your chest to pull the two arm straps together. I find them annoying and haven’t used my backpacks much for hiking so those straps just seem to get in the way of regular every day use.
But, now that I’m actually out and about hiking more, I’ve discovered that those straps are invaluable for keeping the bag close to my back and the weight off my shoulders.
When we went hiking in Santa Fe a few weeks ago, I took the Granite Gear Kahiltna 29 with me as a test run for the Snowman Trek. While I definitely felt the weight with a couple of water bottles, lunch, snacks and a camera all packed in, it was actually astounding to me how much weight was taken off my shoulders and back with the waist straps properly in place and tightened.
While I have actually hiked with backpacks that haven’t had the waist straps pulled off so I do have some experience in this area, I have to say the folks at Granite Gear really nailed it with this one.
The bag itself is big enough to carry everything I need for a full day hike. In addition to what I’ve noted above, there’s also plenty of room for a jacket and extra base layer or two. I’m sure a pair of gaiters would fit as well.
The back of the bag is somewhat stiff, providing some support, but also good for holding a laptop or water bladder in place in the interior pocket. That back panel is also waffled a bit, so plenty of air can get through, preventing you from overheating.
The front zippered pocket has plenty of room for a small digital camera, iPhone, business cards, pens, keys and a protein bar or two.
But most importantly, I can’t say enough about how light the Kahiltna feels on my back, even when full.
What I Love
- The overall build of the bag and the fact that when all tightened up around my body the bag feels quite light.
- The waist straps are removable! Brilliant. They’re removable! That means if I do want to use this as an every day bag, no need to cut them off. 🙂
Not So Much
- The color. Unfortunately this comes in only one color, Red/Grey. But it’s really more orange. I’m not a fan but it’s grown on me because I really really like the bag. When it’s available in purple, I’m buying another.
If you’re looking for a backpack for hiking, I would unequivocally say that you can stop looking.
Available on Amazon for about $130.
Travel Well,
Beth
