Last weekend, I stayed at a bed and breakfast on nearby Whidbey Island. The proprietors of the inn are a young, energetic couple named Bay and Daniel. Bay is from Laos, though it was clear that she’s been in the U.S. for a long time – she was as American as her husband. They have two beautiful girls who have yet to visit their mother’s home country, but hope to get there soon.
As Bay and I chatted about Laos and the beautiful countryside and sunsets, it reminded me of my trip there in ’92 while I was traveling through the Pacific Rim countries for a year.
And that prompted me to pull out some old images that I took on that trip, such as the one above.
Too many years have passed for me to tell you exactly where this is or what it’s called, but I can tell you it was taken in the country’s capital, Vientiane.
My travels there were brief. At the time, the only way to visit the country was with an organized tour but travelers could get a transit visit to stay in the capital for a few days (which is what I did). But, I do remember my time there quite fondly and look forward to returning and traveling through the countryside…
Travel Well!

Laos is the missing piece in my personal map of SE Asia. When we traveled through the region, there was enough unrest there that we decided not to chance a visit, and of course we haven’t yet made it back.
I’m always appreciative when people share their photos of the region, at least I can live through you!
