Last week was a big news week for Bhutan.
The Smithsonian Folklife Festival featured the country in its annual fair held in Washington, D.C. A delegation of more than 120 Bhutanese attended the event – it was reported to be the first time so many Bhutanese had left the country at the same time to arrive in the same location (imagine what they might think if they saw a group of Americans all cruising to the Caribbean).
In honor of that little event, and the fact that I’m leading a tour to this Himalayan Kingdom in April, here are a few items I thought might interest you…
Diane Rehm recently had a number of guests from Bhutan on her show, including Kunzang Choden, author of The Circle of Karma and Kinley Dorji, founding editor of Bhutan’s national newspaper, Kuensel.
My new friend, George, who lives in Hawaii, and was part of the April ’08 trip to Bhutan, recently sent this fun video of Bhutanese monks learning how to surf. It’s really quite sweet:
The Smithsonian’s website includes a number of video clips from the event as well.NPR reported from D.C. this weekend and included interviews with a few of the Bhutanese. It includes some interesting insight into their national sport, archery.
If this is enough to get you thinking about going to Bhutan yourself, please join me in April for a cultural and (light) trekking tour.
