My family arrived in Beijing – our new home – three weeks ago in the midst of some of the worst pollution of the summer. At least that’s what people told me. This is the view out of our hotel window the day we arrived – and then again a few days later after a rain storm passed through.
On that first morning after our arrival, I approached my almost-five-year-old daughter, who stood gazing out the window. She turned to me and said, “It sure is foggy in Beijing.” I looked out at the blanket of brown haze hanging over the city and added a new word to my daughter’s vocabulary, “pollution.”
Two days later, after a summer rain, we stood looking out the same window at a blue Beijing sky. Unfortunately, our joy at seeing the sun was fleeting; after three weeks here, most of of our days have looked like the first, rather than the second photo.
