First, let it be known that I do not consider myself a photographer. I have the good fortune to travel to some pretty amazing destinations. True. And when I point my camera, sometimes I can capture some nice images. But I would say that many times, I’m just lucky. I think I can razzle dazzle some people because my photos are of some pretty interesting places such as Papua New Guinea and Bhutan.
It was for this reason that I decided to opt for a photography tour with Photo Safari Hawaii when I was on Hawaii Island a couple of weeks ago. I was hoping to pick up a tip or two that would help me be a more intentional photographer – not one just happily snapping away.
I think it worked. If only just a little ๐
The tour was led by Photo Safari Hawaii owner, Brian Ross. He’s truly inspired by the artist Wassily Kandinsky and Brian’s approach is that of an artist. As we walked through a forested area, he pointed out the variations in light, texture and composition and made us look for lines and dots. Definitely things I wouldn’t have seen if I were just taking a stroll.
Here’s what I saw with my new eyes on…
I loved the twisted lines of the roots from this tree above.
And the way these draped so straight.
Here I was simply playing around with my focus to see how up close and personal I could get with this flower.
And here, the assignment was to find contrasting light and dark. I think I did a pretty good job with this tree bark. Not something I’d hang on my wall but at least the assignment forced me to see a different way.
Photo Safari Hawaii offers personal photo workshops throughout the islands, each with a slightly different theme.
By the way, there was a (very) professional photographer who was part of my group – he actually leads photo tours himself. I asked him what he thought of the workshop and he really enjoyed it, getting a lot out of the exercises as well. So, you see, there’s something for everyone on one of these tours – no matter your experience level.
