It’s January. I’m in Seattle. And the forecast is rain. Everyday for the foreseeable future. Seriously. The radio announcer was kinda chuckling as he read the forecast for the weekend because it was the same each day.
A girl can dream right? So I started thinking about Hawaii this morning. Specifically, Oahu, where I traveled last September for a little getaway.
But I have to fess up that Oahu is on my radar for another reason.
I just got hooked on Lost. And I mean HOOKED. Mostly filmed on the island, if it wasn’t for the fact that the survivors from this hit TV series weren’t in fear of their life most of the time, it would seem like the ideal place to get stuck. (As a side note, I wouldn’t mind being stuck on Oahu with no way to get off the island.) Since the holidays, we’ve been streaming episode after episode every chance we get. (We’re only on season 3 so no spoilers, please.)
So, Oahu. Above is the view from the Nuuanu Pali Lookout which provides a view of the Windward part of the island. From the moment I stepped out of the car, my hair flew straight back – indeed it’s windy up there. But the view is magnificent and it’s history fascinating. This is the where Kamehameha I and his army drove thousands of Oahuans off the side of the cliff in 1795 in fighting for the control of the island. It’s hard to believe that such a sad and violent occurrence happened in such a beautiful location.
In looking at the above photo, I can’t help but sense the desolation that the characters on Lost must feel. It truly seems like you’re alone (don’t worry, there are plenty of tourists around to curb that feeling PDQ).
While visiting the island, I was hosted by the Hawaii Visitor’s Bureau. They put us up for a couple of nights at the Aqua Bamboo and Spa. This is a little boutique hotel that’s part of a chain of Aqua hotels located around Waikiki. And the Spa does offer an array of services including Lomi Lomi massages.
Probably the best part of traveling to Hawaii is the Aloha Spirit that so many people talk about. You can’t imagine it until you’ve experienced it – it’s the attention to the very smallest of details – like the fresh flowers in your bathroom.
It might seem silly to be excited about such a small thing – but when a hotel pays attention to the details, you know they’re paying attention to the bigger things, too.

Here’s hoping we can all bring a little Aloha spirit into our lives each day – and forget the rain!

Thank you so much for posting about Oahu!! I lived there for almost 5 years when I went to college, and I miss it oh so much! It really is beautiful, and the ohana spirit is something you simply cannot get anywhere else.
I hear you about the rain. I’m in AZ right now, awaiting to travel to Korea next, but it has been raining like crazy here.
You also cannot live on the island without being a fan of Lost. People are obsessed! I cannot wait for the last season to start. While living there I often saw some of the starts out and about on the island. It was so cool!
