September, 2014
Greetings, Wanderluster!
I am now counting the days until we (Jon and I and our small group) leave for the Snowman Trek in Bhutan. You could say this 25-day, 220-mile trek across the Himalayas is my Be Bold moment (OK, a few moments!). I’ll be offline during the trek but you can bet you’ll be hearing all about it afterward (mid-October). Um, wish me luck?!
A big thank you for your vote(s) and making Wanderlust and Lipstick USA Today’s Best Budget Travel Blog! Well, officially I won, but really, the honor goes to our entire team. But more than anything, this win shows the dedication of you, our Wanderlusters, who showed support by voting us to the top. I hope this bit of recognition helps spread our message of encouraging more women to get out and discover the world.
In tour news…it’s a bit last minute, but we just had a cancellation on our Thailand and Laos tour in November. Interested? Email me right away.

On the Bookshelf
The Adventure Traveler’s Handbook
by Nellie Huang
I know Nellie and I loved reading the backstory of how she was a reluctant adventurer at first but learned to push beyond invisible boundaries to become an adventurous traveler (and successful business woman!). Her book is a mixture of practical tips and inspirational stories and an excellent guide for those wanting to explore new ways to travel.
In the iPod
Mali Overdrive by Anansy Cisse
So much great music comes out of West Africa but it’s a shame there’s so much unrest that we can’t visit to experience it for ourselves. At least we have CDs like this from Anansy Cisse. Anansy mixes traditional music with distorted, electric guitar playing. This definitely has the sound of West Africa but with a bit of a twist.
In the DVD
Desert Runners
If you ever need motivation for doing something, watch Desert Runners. This follows the story of a handful of non-professional athletes as they basically run ultra-marathons across four deserts, all in one year. This is a fantastic documentary about the willpower we all posses but rarely need (or want) to tap into.
WanderGear Review
Nite Ize Gear
Nite Ize produces a wide range of practical (yet fun) items that are great for travel, camping and beyond. Check out their small flashlights, caribiners, gear ties and much more. I’ve found these to come in handy as packing accessories that I didn’t know I needed but now love. Read more here…
