U.S. citizens: Have you ever driven more than 50 miles into Canada? If so, did you know that you are required to have an International Driving Permit to do so?
I was floored when I found this out. I’ve driven into and through Canada on more occasions than I can count (including two trips to Alaska) and I had no idea that one was required. You also need one to drive through Mexico but, strangely enough, only if you’re traveling more than 300 miles into the country.
But these aren’t the only countries that require IDPs when you’re driving your own vehicle, a friend’s or a rental. Many countries around the world require one. I had to show mine when crossing the border between Switzerland and France. And though it’s a remote possibility you’ll get asked for it, there’s no harm in having one on hand.
If you’re planning on traveling abroad, here are answers to International Driving Permit FAQs.
What’s an International Driving Permit?
It’s really just a document translated into multiple languages that includes your name, photo and driver’s license information. The difference from your regular DL, however, is that it is written in 10 languages. You don’t need to take a test to get one but you do need your original DL in order to do so.
Where can I get my International Driving Permit?
You can go to your nearest AAA office to pick one up in person. To save time, fill out their application in advance and bring two passport-sized photos (alternately, they can take these photos on-site).
If you don’t have a nearby AAA office or want to mail it in, you can do that also. Instructions are on the application page linked above.
What countries require an International Driving Permit?
There are over 150 countries where your IDP is valid. You can see a list of countries here. Please note that Brazil, Uruguay and Trinidad & Tobago require something slightly different – an Inter-American Driving Permit. That can also be obtained from AAA.
Do I need an International Driving Permit if I’m driving someone else’s car or a rental?
Yes, you do.
What’s the cost of an International Driving Permit?
It’s just $15.
Do I need an IDP to rent a car in Europe?
No you don’t. But you may be asked for this by authorities at check points or if you get pulled over for a traffic infraction. If you’re renting a car, try Enterprise’s Europe rental site for deals.
Must I travel with an International Driving Permit if I plan on driving a vehicle?
While it may not be required in the countries where you’re traveling, it is recognized by many countries and would be helpful to have to avoid any potential issues.
For how long is an International Driving Permit valid?
Your IDP is good for one year from the date of issue.
Can I apply for an IDP once I’m traveling abroad?
Indeed you can. There are instructions on this AAA page with instructions on how to do so.
Remember that in some countries you’ll be driving on the opposite side of the road. Something to take into account if you’re thinking about driving. Also, many cars in Europe are manual shift rather an automatic, requiring you to get used to shifting with your left hand.
Good luck! 🙂

Beth
