Fascination meets inspiration on this special journey into the heart of India’s cultured south
Meandering ancient temples, exploring Kerala’s waterways by houseboat and breathing in the sweet air of tea and spice plantations, a small group of women will share in a bounty for the senses on an 18-day tour through South India. Exclusive opportunities such as hands-on cooking workshops, seaside yoga classes and traditional theater shows await travelers and allow them to connect with the local way of life.
Trip participants will also have the unique opportunity to visit the Passports Village, a rural community of Dalits (untouchables) for which 25 homes have been built by the Passports with Purpose travel bloggers fundraiser in partnership with Friends of LAFTI. They’ll visit these homes in the Karunganni area and will witness firsthand the positive impact that can result when individuals support this kind of grassroots fundraising.
David H. Albert, the founder of Friends of LAFTI, is excited to welcome these special travelers on the heels of the 2010 Passports with Purpose fundraiser. He says, “The work made possible by Passports with Purpose is life-changing! Families who have lived in squalor for centuries, subject to the whims of the elements, now have the dignity of real homes. Places to sleep, places to cook, places for children to study their lessons in the evenings. Karunganni can now be proud to hold up its head, thanks to Passports with Purpose.”
A WanderTours guide will accompany the group, which is limited to just 15 women. In addition, experienced local guides will lend their unique perspective on the customs and cultures of India. The cost is $4,575 and includes in-country transportation, accommodation, guides and meals as noted in the itinerary. Tour dates are January 25 — February 11, 2012.
