I recently noted the increase of Indian women traveling solo and joining tour groups in India. They’re flexing their wings and seeing more of their country and the world as they discover newfound independence.
Yet, the U.S. Department of State’s website says, “U.S. citizens, particularly women, are cautioned not to travel alone in India”.
Yeah – be sure to get yourself to New York City to spend your money as quickly as possible though.
Sorry, but I have to take a moment to get on my soapbox.
After the 9/11 attacks, “W” recommended that we all go to NYC to shop and support the economy there. Hazardous dust and all, nothing was too risky if we could just help prop up the economy. Yet, after the Bali bombings in 2002 near Kuta Beach, our State Department warned against travel to Bali. Where’s the fairness?
If you’re considering a journey abroad and you’re reading the Department of State’s website for background and suggestions, please, take it with a grain salt. Recommending that individuals NOT travel to India is simply irresponsible and spreading ignorance that comes from not knowing the area.
Of COURSE, take special precautions when you are on your own. And, of COURSE, there are countries, regions and cities that are simply not safe for anyone (groups or singles). However, do your research beyond the U.S. government’s recommendations, get to know other travelers who have traveled in the region you’re interested in going to, be very cautious where necessary and then GO!
Happy Travels!
