What kind of Recipe of the Week would this be if I didn’t feature a cocktail from Curaçao using Curaçao of Curaçao? My goodness… that’s a whole lot of Curaçao!
This azure-tinged liqueur was created on the main island in the 19th century by the Senior family. The fruit used to make the liqueur, the lahara, is a citrus fruit that was originally transported to Curaçao by the Spanish in 1499. They planted the trees, which were meant to grow Valencia oranges, but due to inhospitable conditions (inadequate nutrients in the soil, dry climate) the species of tree changed and the fruit grew to be small and extremely bitter – inedible even to the goats! Later, by accident, the locals discovered that when left to dry in the sun, the peels of the lahara yielded a lovely, fragrant oil.
The Senior family soaked the dried peels in alcohol and water, and then added locals spices to create Curaçao of Curaçao; the rest is history!
Though there are countless cocktail recipes that use Curaçao of Curaçao (check out the company’s website!), here is a great, simple recipe for Blue Beard’s Favourite, from DrinkFocus.com.
