Santa Fe: Photo of the Day
I think in another life I lived in New Mexico. Because it’s here that I feel really at home and at peace. And it’s where I would love to retire (though the hubby has a different idea – ahem, Hawaii).
Just looking at the adobe buildings, like this one in Santa Fe, always brings a sense of longing to me. I can feel the warmth and smell the chilies!
Well, fortunately, I get to look forward to that later this year as I just announced (as one person put it) this “starter tour.” This culinary tour to Santa Fe will take place over 4 days in September. The trip will include cooking classes and demonstrations, a downtown walking tour, a talk on chocolate, an afternoon soak in hot mineral springs and lots of eating 
As a vegetarian, I can assure you that this will be suitable for both vegetarians and meat eaters.

Along with the adobe buildings, this really says New Mexico to me. This is an underground kiva, a cooking stove used by native Americans.
I happen to think the New Mexico landscape is gorgeous – despite how dry it is. This is the view from Pedernal, a narrow mesa that’s located just south of Abiquiu. It was an area favored by Georgia O’Keeffe (she actually had her ashes spread here). I can see why she got so much inspiration from the desert!

New Mexico is one of my most favorite places in the world. I like to spend time at Gila National Forest. Camping there is sublime.
I bet that kiva is in Pecos National Park. I went down there in September and it was grand. I,too, loved the landscape and the light in New Mexico.

I love the desert. Never been in the American desert, though. Quite different from the Sahara – more vegetation, it looks like.
Beth: I spent a great deal of time in northern New Mexico (Albuquerque, Santa Fe and pueblos) over the past ten years doing research for a book, and it is indeed a gorgeous place. Love your pictures.
And to Sophie: YES, both the Sonoran and the Chihuahua deserts have more vegetation rather than sand dunes, but particularly the Sonoran, which is Arizona. Come visit me in Tucson to see truly LUSH desert.
When I was doing my research, I was too busy to explore really good eating, so I wish I could do your tour. Alas, I’ll be book touring instead.
