Photo of the Day: Monks with Camera

by Beth Whitman - Wanderluster (August 21st, 2009)

Monks with CameraI shouldn’t be surprised when I see monks doing things that laypeople do. But, I cracked up when I saw these two young monks in Bangkok in one of the temples near the Grand Palace. Just like the rest of us tourists, they were taking pictures of each other in front of a large Buddha statue.

I know what you mean about how your shouldn’t be surprised. I worked at a Catholic school for awhile and it still surprised me to see the nuns doing things we all do, which is silly I know!

Good picture. It’s show the reality of monk in Thailand. :) Some people might not know that becoming a monk in Thailand can be a temporary event. Most Thai boys will go into monkhood once in their lifetime either as a spiritual event or to honor their family. :) It’s not the lifetime commitment like priests or pastors in Christianity.

Hilarious! One of my funnier memories was when I was in Benevento, Italy last year, and three nuns totally outfitted appropriately were leading a group of school kids, and they each had about five P&S cameras and phones in their hands snapping shots of the kids. THEN I rounded the corner to find a priest chatting on his iPhone. For such an authentic Italian environment, it was all so surreal!

Great capture! Monks are just like us, especially in South-East Asia where they are frequently only monks for a short time, from three months to two years.

I would be cracking up too. We are supposed to be taking pictures of them, it’s like the actor coming out and telling us about his life! It’s weird:)
