It’s getting hot out there, but with winter on my mind, I train. The question is always how can I stay fit until the next opportunity to slide? I’ve tried many options, but running seems to be the most fun and effective method. Trail running in particular is an awesome fit for the following reasons (according to Skiing Magazine):
- Being softer than pavement, trails provide good impact absorption, therefore better protecting joints
- Uphill running provides an intense cardio training that can be likened to skiing long runs
- Quadriceps, the key muscles for skiers, are particularly worked when running downhill
- Uneven terrain challenges stabilizers and strong supporting musculature means further injury prevention
On a personal note, it’s just plain fun; trail running is a close feeling to that of skiing. I may huff and puff, but I enjoy it nonetheless. Now, bring RunKeeper into the equation and you’re bound to win. Designed for smart phones, RunKeeper allows fitness enthusiasts to track a host different physical activities in real time: choose your activity, hit the big green button and be on your way. You choose the information you want to hear, when you want to hear it. I like to stay on top of the game by being updated every five minutes with my distance and average speed. When you’re done, stop and save the activity for another job well done. If bragging rights are your thing, you can connect with other RunKeeper friends and even share your wins on Facebook.
The Pros:
- Not only is it practical for staying on top of your fitness, it’s also great motivation to keep it up
- RunKeeper will routinely let you know when you have broken your personal bests and encourage you to set goals.
- When winter does finally come, you can also use the app to track your skiing or riding
The Con:
- If your GPS signal happens to be a little weak, RunKeeper may have issues with providing accurate information
