One of our best vacations ever was camping in the Liwa Desert with friends a few hours outside of Abu Dhabi. According to Wikipedia, the area known as the Empty Quarter “is one of the largest sand deserts in the world, encompassing most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula, including southern Saudi Arabia, and territory in Oman, the United Arab Emerites, and Yemen. The desert covers some 250,000 square miles.” It was as lovely and romantic as you would imagine, with the exception of the late night dune buggy race which could be heard but not seen.
