With my father in town, I finally visited the uniquely designed, Marina Bay Sands, a branch of the Las Vegas hotel and casino, which opened in Singapore on April 27, 2010. From afar, the building resembles a boat, floating on three large skyscrapers. The hotel’s infinity pool covers about the half the rooftop, along with the KU DE TA restaurant and SkyPark, where visitors can gaze at Singapore’s ever-changing skyline.
To ascend this architectural monument is not cheap. Adults pay S$20 (USD16), children (between 2 and 12) $S14 and seniors over 65 $S17. More fun is to get a pass from the KU DE TA kiosk on the ground floor and ride up to the outdoor bar, located on the 57th floor adjacent to the SkyPark. Sure, it will be the most expensive drink you’ve ever had, but it gives you a chance to sit and enjoy the view. We opted for KU DE TA, where we had one glass of wine and one lime soda for a total (including tax) of S$36. Tickets to the SkyPark would have run us S$37.
Both the KU DE TA and SkyPark provide a stunning view of Singapore’s harbor, crowded with ships, and the city’s downtown skyline. The Bar offers an additional view of the hotel’s infinity pool, which is definitely not for those who suffer from vertigo. While the outing was a splurge to be sure, I would recommend it – at least once.
