SteriPEN water purifiers remain on my top 5 list of favorite travel items ever.
If you’re not familiar with SteriPEN, here are a couple of basics:
- These are small, easy to carry water purifiers that run on batteries.
- The UV light used in SteriPENs kill 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses and 99.9% of protozoa (i.e. Giardia and Cryptosporidium).
- You simply turn it on, dip the SteriPEN purifier in water and stir Within 48-90 seconds, you’ve got drinkable water.
Most importantly to me, however, is the fact that:
- You’re not contributing to the piles of plastic bottles that get left behind in so many countries that do not recycle.
- You’re saving money by not having to purchase all that bottled water.
So… wanna win your own?
Throughout May, you can enter to win your very own SteriPEN Traveler. One lucky winner will be chosen on June 1, 2011.
This month you have TWO CHANCES TO WIN!
1) Sign up for the Wanderlust and Lipstick newsletter. This goes out just once a month and your information is never shared.
2) Sign up for the RSS email feed (see the “subscribe me” box at right) to receive an email each time I post to this blog (usually no more than 3x per week).
Subscribe to both and you’ve got 2 chances to win this month!
Oh, and be a good egg… forward this along to someone whom you think might like to enter and win their very own SteriPEN. At the very least, you might alert someone to this fantastic product that should be in the luggage of every traveler!
Approximate Value: $60 (including 4 AA lithium batteries)
This contest closes at 11:59 pm PST on May 31, 2011 and the lucky winner will be chosen on June 1. We can only ship to North American addresses (sorry!).
The winner will have 3 days to respond before another winner is chosen.
Good luck!
Travel Well,

I’m in total agreement with you, Beth. My family and I have used a steripen for three years and I used it exclusively for three months this year while traveling in India. I also shared it with numerous fellow travelers I met along the way, who also didn’t want to add to the horrendous problem of pollution caused by plastic bottles…which the Indians burn as their way of getting rid of the waste. You can imagine what THAT causes in the air4! This is a must for all travelers in Adiaa.

Sorry. I can’t correct my typos. I meant travelers in Asia…not that new country I seem to have invented. Meg

The cost of a SteriPEN versus the cost of buying bottled water – not to mention the environmental impact of plastic – does not even compare.
One of my favorite travel products!

I wish I had one of these when I went to Vietnam last summer. I definitely knew that the water was going to be questionable over there but I didn’t realize that the people there (especially in the larger cities and when going to restaurants) simply buy bottled water instead of boiling it or packing it and bringing it along. (When I stayed with my friend’s family in Vietnam we boiled the water and filled up our water bottles every day though. This definitely made me feel better about my impact on the earth.) However, my family in Vietnam would not allow me to drink anything other than bottled water either because they were afraid that boiled water might still have something in it that would cause me to get sick. Interestingly, there were certain brands of bottled water that they refused from restaurants but sodas (Sprite>>light limey water, not like the super sugary carbonated stuff in the U.S.) were usually always ok. And of course, I never drank anything with ice. Who would’ve known where the water for it came from?
