Seattle, WA – 5/08
Wanderlust and Lipstick author Beth Whitman is teaming up with Mama Tembo Tours to
promote a unique safari to Tanzania, East Africa. This small-group, tailor-made tour has been
specially designed by Leslie Nevison of Mama Tembo Tours to appeal to the adventurous spirit of
Wanderlusters.
The 15-day tour for eight people is scheduled for February 5th through the 19th, 2009. It begins
and ends in Arusha, Northern Tanzania. It is timed to catch Tanzania’s famous wildebeest migration–designated the eighth new wonder of the world–as well as wildebeest and zebra
foaling season which peaks at the same time. It is also expected that participants will see many
other wildlife species including big cats, hyenas, elephants, and birds of prey.
Leslie explains, “The best safari combines game viewing with opportunities for cultural encounters and explorations on foot.” This safari has that ideal mix. Participants will spend quality time with the Maasai, Datoga and Hadza people, the latter of which are the last remaining numbers of an ancient hunter-gatherer group. It also devotes six days to hiking areas where travelers rarely visit. Accommodations include comfortable lodges, permanent tented camps, and private mobile camping where nights are spent reviewing the day around the campfire followed by sleeping under the stars. There is no more intimate way to experience the Tanzanian bush.
While there is no age limit, Leslie says, “Participants must be fit enough to walk about 12
miles per day. I have had 69 year olds on these hikes. They tend to put us younger ones to shame
with their fitness level and love of adventure.” She adds, “Camping experience would be a great
asset, but not required as long as the spirit is willing.”
Leslie splits her time between Vancouver, Canada and Tanzania; speaks Kiswahili well; and
has a deep love and respect for African culture and environment. This 15-day adventure includes
domestic travel, food, lodging, experienced driver/wildlife guides, and Leslie’s leadership and
knowledge.
