Camping is ingrained in the heart and soul of every true Canadian. To put it simply, we love nature and the great outdoors. Before you start getting some romanticzed notion of our great love affair with nature, keep in mind it is often accompanied by a certain amount of alcohol. Which is not to say we are alcoholics by any means; many of us simply enjoy a beer or glass of wine at sunset on the lake.
“I’m going to the lake” is one of the most common phrases you’ll hear from co-workers and friends on a Friday afternoon during the summer. It’s also pretty common to hear during the colder months as many enjoy snowmobiling, cross-country skiing or hunting in remote and pristine wilderness settings.
Saskatchewan is home to hundreds of lakes, many of which have been designated provincial parks. This means the province maintains all of the facilities and for a nominal fee, you get your own site, complete with weenie-roasting pit, picnic table and hook-ups for the RV (although it’s not really camping if you’re not in a tent!)
Summer days are spent jet-skiing, fishing, swimming, boating, building sand castles and eating ice cream cones, while nights are enjoyed around the campfire with good friends, conversation, food and drink. Unfortunately, Canadian summers are very short. This leaves us with two options: whine and gripe about the cold, long winter or get out there and embrace it! JennKSharp
