Whether you’re on an extended trip or just looking for somewhere to unwind after a long day of sightseeing, sometimes you need to find a yoga studio on the road. Here are some tips to help you find a place to salute the sun while away from home:
1. There’s an app for that.
There’s an app for just about everything, and finding a yoga studio is no exception. Lululemon’s Om Finder is probably the most well known of these apps. It aggregates nearby yoga studios offering upcoming classes by using MINDBODY Online. MINDBODY also has its own app, MINDBODY Connect, which has the added benefit of allowing you to sign up for classes through the app. I also like the YogaTrail app, which doesn’t let you know which classes are happening soon but doesn’t rely on MINDBODY for studios.
2. Just Google it.
While the apps listed above are helpful, they are not 100% comprehensive. A good old-fashioned internet search can help you round out the picture, as well as cluing you in on pop-up classes or other yoga events.
3. Give it the virtual once-over.
Once you’ve found some potential studios, check out their web presence. Visit their websites for important details like rates (be on the lookout for new student specials!) and mat rental, as well as to check out pictures of the space and read about the teachers. Check out their social media accounts to get a feel for the atmosphere.
4. Map the route from your hotel.
When looking at the map, remember that distance isn’t everything. Consider whether the route will take you through potentially undesirable areas and the accessibility of public transportation. Don’t forget to think about class timing: while you might be used to attending early morning classes at home, you may want to reconsider walking to a pre-dawn class in a strange city. I planned to attend a 7:00 a.m. yoga class on my first full day in Cape Town, only to discover that it was still pitch black when I needed to leave.
5. Keep an open mind!
Unless you practice at a chain studio like Yogaworks or Exhale, you probably won’t find a studio exactly like your favorite studio back home. Don’t let that dissuade you! I was hesitant to try a conveniently located yoga studio abroad because the vinyasa classes were practiced in a heated room. I didn’t think that I would like a heated practice, but I gave it a try anyway and found it a refreshing change. Remember that part of the beauty of travel is trying new things.
