Have you ever noticed that there are signs everywhere? Everyday signs start to go unnoticed, like that that stop sign where no one else is ever at so you slide through. There is movie (I have not seen it yet) called Signs. People in anguish and despair over life choices sometimes ask for a sign. Diane Lane in the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun” gets a sign to buy the villa when a pigeon poops on her. Oh how signs can inspire, delight, perplex and surprise us! The interpretation is always up to us.
On one of my latest hikes I was delighted to capture some unique signage. Now if I had been lost and uncertain which way town was this sign would be really useful! Instead I simply enjoyed the large mossy covered boulder with the ghoulish pumpkin perched atop it. This weathered sign say “To town” but I already knew that.
I notice too that for every one “obvious” sign like this one, there are more subtle signs. Like the high you feel after your weekly yoga class that took every bit of commitment to get to on time. Your body mind spirit is saying, I LOVED that can we do it again? Or paying attention to how drained you feel after going to lunch with that old girlfriend that somehow manages to not really see you for who you are. And have been for decades but somehow while you have outgrown the same old negative loop that used to feed you she has not.
Sometimes signs tell you just what you need when you need it. Like this poison oak sign which I have to say has NOT appeared when I needed it but nonetheless perhaps saved someone else the trouble of trying to google pictures of poison oak in remote places with bad reception.
Recently I was walking across the street after work when a young girl asked if she could use my cell phone. I said yes and directed us to move out of the middle of the busy driveway. As she was talking about a party she was going to have that weekend to her friend I realized that her name was Bella. When she got off the phone, I introduced myself as my name is Bella too. We shared some small talk, I asked her if she was ok and believed her when she said yes. She thanked me and we parted ways.
That weekend while catching up with a friend in a small town nearby, guess who walks by but Bella so I say hi. She doesn’t recognize me at first with my black cap on so I take it off and she joyously says “Hi Bella!”. I asked her what she was doing there and said I’m having a party next door. Over the next hour, my friend and I meet her mom, her sister, her uncle and grandmother all there for her party. Soon after, something magical happens when Bella’s mom invites us to join the party!
We decided to go and celebrate Bella, it was all just too synchronistic to ignore. I learned so much about this young woman, Bella, who is 12 years old with deep soulful eyes that tell the truth of years beyond her physical age. We have a lot in common and I’m thrilled to have expand my world to include this inspiring new friend.
And then there are just plain old funny fun signs that make you smile as you multitask in a public bathroom!
What signs are showing up in your life? Is there a theme or maybe all signs point to move. Or stay put. If you can, ask for a sign and then slow down enough to listen. I’d love to hear what you find!
