WinterShines rolled out in full force last weekend in Saskatoon and people are enjoying the seasonably warm temperatures at the festival.
One of the most exciting events for WinterShines (and a first for Canada), the Yukigassen Challenge will take place January 27 to 29, in the Delta Bessborough Gardens. Japanese for ‘Snow Battle,’ Yukigassen is a dynamic sport for all ages and skill levels. The sport has been hugely popular in Japan for the past 21 years, and is coming to Canada for the first time in 2011.
A visit to the Tourism Saskatoon’s Yukigassen website explains how the sport is played. Dozens of Yukigassen videos have also been uploaded to YouTube. The battle will be held in the gardens of Saskatoon’s landmark hotel, the Delta Bessborough. The gardens are the perfect venue for Yukigassen, providing a Roman coliseum feel as they allow spectators to sit higher up and watch down into the playing field.
