Love wine? Well, now you can wear it thanks to the Micro’be’ fashion line launched by a scientist and an artist.
Through a biological fermentation process, researchers at The University of Western Australia, in conjunction with Bioalloy, have figured out a way for garments to literally form themselves without a stitch of thread or fabric utilizing wine (or any other alcohol).
By introducing acetobacter, the bacteria used in the fermentation process of turning wine into vinegar, it produces celluose, which is chemically similar to cotton.
Now the art form behind the fashion. Artist Donna Franklin has collaborated with inventor of the technology, Gary Cass, to create The Micro’be’ fermented fashion line.
Gary Cass of Bioally, told Wired.co.uk website, “The Micro’-be’ garments are made from microbial cotton which forms on the surface of the wine, almost as if the bacteria are trying to form a raft to flow on the wine.”
“We have perfected a technique that will allow the bacteria to form a three-dimensional seamless garment that can be formed to fit the wearer like a second skin,” Cass added.
Not sure if this qualifies for upcycling, eco-friendly or just plain sci-fi fashion, but whatever it is, you’d definitely make a statement wearing your new fermented dress that even smells like wine.
Lady Gaga wore a dress made of beef steaks, so maybe it’s not such a disgusting idea to wear fermented fashions…
What do you think? Would you wear a wine dress?
