The Fisher Space Pen boldly goes wherever you do.
Designed for space travel, the Space Pen easily withstands even the most extreme environments of worldly travel. Last month, I shared my favorite hat for wander writers. One feature that makes this hat so perfect for a writer is that it has small belt loops to hold your choice of hat bands in place. You can easily tuck a pen in those loops too.
The pen I’d like to review for that purpose is the legendary Fisher Space Pen. First, let’s satisfy our inner geek with the story of how the Space Pen was designed by the Fisher Pen Company for use during space travel. Yes, SPACE TRAVEL! I don’t know about how demanding your travel style is but if this baby can withstand the cold of space, the heat of re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, pressures from zero gravity up to a possible 12g of ballistic reentry, well… I’d say the Space pen has my travel needs covered. (Is it humanly possible to lift your hand to write at 12g? I wouldn’t think so but if you could, the Space Pen would work.)
The pen and ink will work at temperatures from 30 degrees to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. This means you can write in your journal from base cam on Mt. Everest or in a Bedouin tent in the Sahara. On Earth the Space Pen is gravity independent. That means you can write uphill with the pen tip higher than the butt (like when you write against a wall.) You can even write upside-down (like when you lie on your back gazing at clouds and a brilliant idea for a novel occurs to you.)
The pen and ink are both water compatible. You can write on damp paper in the sub-tropical humidity or after dropping your notebook in a puddle. The ink will not run or bleed. So go ahead and take long walks in the rain for inspiration and don’t be afraid to take your pen and notebook with you. If your long walk in the rain inspires poetry, go ahead and write a few lines under heaven’s tears.

The bullet design is slim and compact, making it a low profile addition to my Tilley “writer’s hat.” While that narrow barrel is part of what makes it such a versatile traveling companion, it may cause some trouble if you are especially prone to writer’s cramp. It’s no skinnier than a standard pen though, so if you’re comfortable with a Bic, you’ll be fine with a Fisher Space Pen.
I love my Space Pen. It lives in my Tilley TH9 hat and is always ready to capture my travel-inspired thoughts. Now all I need is the perfect notebook for the Hat’s secret pocket.
