Here’s an interesting way to spike your travel journal with a little creativity.
Think of a really good book you’ve read and imagine the protagonist is going to your destination. Write a scene of her packing for the trip. Then write a scene of her unpacking at her destination.
What thoughts are going through the character’s head?
What kind of luggage would the character have?
What would the character think is essential to the trip?
Try writing the unpacking scene with the character discovering he needs something he doesn’t have.
Try to write the packing/unpacking scene using in the style of the author that invented the character.
What if Jane Eyre were going to New Orleans? What if Phillip Marlowe were going to Beijing?
To really stretch your creativity, come up with a reason for them to make the trip.
An alternative to this exercise it to spend each day of your trip writing in a different character’s voice. In stead of you writing about how you saw the Eiffel Tower, write as if you were Katniss Everdeen seeing the Eiffel Tower and describing it. Perhaps she is even worried the Capitol may be using it as a transmission tower.
Enjoy your explorations and follow the story!
