Happy 150th anniversary to the London Underground. The subway system that Londoners affectionately dub “the tube” opened 150 years ago today.
Annie Mole has been blogging a London Underground Tube Diary irreverently documenting her thoughtful journeys below London.
For my part, I’m reading Stephen Smith’s Underground London: Travels Below the City Streets for insight to the history of the Tube itself and the history it has exposed. The secrets buried under London go back much farther than a mere 150 years. I’m looking forward to the chapters exposing plague pits and ancient sewers. It’s amazing to think what London’s commuters zip past every day, sometimes without even noticing.
Do you ever think about the history of the places you inhabit every day? Have you ever “taken the tube”? What is your impression of travel on the London Underground?
