Never in a million years did I think I’d be eating anchovies for breakfast, but I did every glorious morning in San Sebastian, Spain. This gem in the Basque region is a pintxo paradise.
Our friend who lives there designed the album covers for our first two releases, but we had never met in person. After our tour in Eastern Europe and recording sessions in London, we were left with an unexpected 4 days to ourselves.
We weighed the options and for about the same amount of money we could either hang out in London, or fly to Donosti and meet Iker. We jumped at the chance to visit a friend, eat pintxos, and relax on the beach.
Knowing a local was a great advantage and he gave us a grand tour of the city the first day. On our first morning, after making us fresh squeezed orange juice, he took us for breakfast to a place called Restaurante Ni Neu near Zurriola Beach. I had what you see pictured above.
It is a slice of baguette bread, spread with homemade mayonnaise mixed with tuna, layered with a roasted red pepper, and anchovies. The topping is a mix of Espelette peppers and olive oil. It was so delicious and the outdoor seating was so perfect, we went back each morning during our visit.
Give it a try and be sure to use the white anchovies!
