In honor of 3.14 – National Pie Day – I’d like to honor the Meat Pies of England (savory pies are my favorites).
My first savory pie was a vegetable curry pie sold in Wembley Stadium – yep, stadium food. One taste and I was hooked for life. Don’t remember much about the football game, but I’ll never forget that curry in flaky pastry.
Whenever I go to London, I make a pilgrimage to my family’s old pub, The Volunteer, where my grandmother was born, and where my great grand-father and great-grandmother met (she was a brown-eyed singer – sister to the publican, and he was a tall, handsome Austrian). It’s no longer in the family (alas!), but I still try to picture it as it must have looked before WWI when it wasn’t just a pub, but a family home – and right next door to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous Baker Street apartment!
Last, but not least, is my favorite meat pie of all time: Pie Minister in the Oxford covered market. I spent a week in Oxford the last time I was there and ate here at least three times. Could not get enough.
Where in the world are your favorite pies? Tell me in the comments!
