If you truly want an authentic experience in any city, I believe markets are the way to go. There’s something about browsing aisles after aisles of fresh ingredients and homemade products that makes you feel so at home in a city. Each market has its own unique aesthetic and you can learn a lot about the people and culture of a place from spending a little time in a market. Next time you’re in the city, check out my top five favorite markets in Melbourne:
(Via Rose St. Artists Market)
Rose St. Artists market: If you’re looking for a unique and quirky experience, check out the Rose St. Artists market. This place is full of creative types that sell all things handmade. You’ll find jewelry, photography, clothes, accessories, vintage goods, as well as a variety of tasty treats, such as cupcakes, cookies, and cakes. Make sure to stop by the rooftop bar at the Young Bloods Diner for an exceptional meal! It is a bit on the pricey side, but it includes many vegetarian and vegan items, such as the butternut squash, eggplant, sautéed vegetables, and a variety of cold pressed juices! Delicious!
Open: Saturdays and Sundays
Coburg Farmer’s market: Located just 20 minutes outside of Melbourne, this market is a great way to experience the city like a local. This is a smaller market that is part of a larger group known as the Victorian Farmer’s Market Association. They have a wide selection of fresh and organic produce. Be sure to stop by if you are planning on doing a lot of cooking in Melbourne!
Open: 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month
(Via Pieces of Victoria)
Winter night market: Held in the same building as the Queen Victoria market, this market offers a fun mix of cool and eclectic vendors that are sure to spice up any Australian winter. You will find fashion, accessories, jewelry, art, food, wine, music, and many performances! Among the food and drink options are mushroom burgers from The Little Mushroom Co., pizza from 400 Gradi, deep fried doughnut holes, pad thai, and lots of hot chocolate and cider. Just writing this is making my mouth water. There’s nothing like cider and doughnuts on a cold winter day!
Open: Wednesdays from June 3 to August 26
Queen Victoria market: The “Vic Market” or “Queen Vic” is probably the most well known market in Melbourne. Located right in the heart of the city, it is a bit touristy, but for good reason and should be a must see for anyone visiting. You can stock up on everything at this market from fruits and vegetables to hand made crafts, clothes, and other artisan goods. It is a two story market that has stalls inside as well as several street vendors. My favorite part of this market (aside from the beautiful jewelry) was the large selection of organic produce. A visit to Melbourne isn’t complete without visiting Queen Vic!
Open: Tuesday, Thursday-Sunday
(Via Weekend Notes)
South Melbourne market: This market is absolutely perfect if you want to experience Melbourne like a local. They offer everything from local, organic farmers that sell fruits and vegetables to handmade crafts, jewelry, and clothes. Some of the food items that stand out are the beautiful burritos from Paco y Lola, the crepes from La Lapa, organic Italian gelato from Fritz Gelato, and ANYTHING from Clement Coffee.
Open: Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
