A few weeks ago, I was craving momo’s. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many places in Seattle that serve them so I had to do a bit of investigative work.
I found a place in Ravenna, The Himalayan Kitchen, that did just the trick for me.
You may be asking, “What’s a momo?”
It’s a small Tibetan dumpling filled with meat, or in my case, veggies. Made from a simple flour and water dough, these little often-round pockets of goodness are usually served with a hot sauce and filled with a variety of minced ingredients.
I experienced my first ones in Nepal more than 20 years ago. While I’ve had them here and there since, I got re-hooked when a restaurant, Tibet First, opened in the U-district nearly 2 years ago. It closed just months after opening but I’ve been looking for an equivalent ever since.
Though nothing is ever as good as the food you experience in its country of origin, The Himalayan Kitchen makes a good runner up if you can’t jet off to Asia.
Though I’m not as fond of the spinach dough (not because of the taste but only because I don’t consider them to be as authentic), they were still an excellent find. They are probably trying to cater to western tastes, but I found the hot sauce not quite as hot as I would have liked.
The momo’s are served with a delicious vegetarian soup.
I shared the momo’s, soup and an order of plain naan with a friend and we were quite full after the meal. The naan was cooked up quite nicely and was served up with a variety of sauces for dipping.
