The east coast of Canada. The Maritimes. Home of the fresh lobster and stunning cliffside views. Also home to the friendliest people you will ever meet in your entire life. I could dedicate a month’s worth of blogposts on the sheer happiness that you see in almost every single person’s face living in Nova Scotia. But don’t worry, I wont.
I had been to Halifax a couple times. Mainly sticking to the downtown, I explored the small city from top to bottom. This time around I had a couple more hours to play with, so I decided to drive out of the city. I had heard from friends and family that the drive to Peggy’s Cove was a must do.
I woke up bright and early and made my way to the car rental location, hoping they would have something for me without a reservation. An hour later I was equipped with a GPS-less car and a map of a province I was not very familiar with. The recipe for either a disaster or a great day.
It took me about 45 minutes to reach my destination, but it honestly felt like 5. The landscape around me was so beautiful it was hard to just not be mesmerized by it. Don’t worry I did still keep my eyes on the road. Once I parked, I got out and just walked around the rough rocks. Occasionally having a seat and admiring the fishing boats and of course the lighthouse. It’s not a big area by any means, but there is something calming about it. I am not a quiet person by any stretch of the imagination, but I didn’t feel like talking here.
I enlisted a stranger into taking some pictures of me squishing the lighthouse with my hands (which as you will see went horribly wrong) and got back into my car. Although the drive back was the same scenery, I was still impressed by the beauty that is on that coastline.
With a couple hours to spare before my flight, I did manage to squeeze in some fish and chips at a local diner in Halifax before returning the car.
I know that the east coast is not frequented that much, and frankly before I went to Halifax I knew very little about it. This is a shame. It is peaceful and serene. It has an untouched natural beauty. The people will blow your mind and frankly I do not know a single person who has been and didn’t love it.
If you have a month, week, or just a quick stopover like myself, have a look into Peggy’s Cove. The drive is short and sweet, and the destination is beautiful.
