I don’t read much during the summertime. I choose to spend my time playing in the sunshine rather than burying my nose in a book; That’s what the fall and winter season is for. 🙂 To me, November means shorter days of sunshine, larger cups for hot tea and more time to catch up on my reading.

I was inspired by this compilation of short stories that focused on female river rafting guides. I know, big surprise here, that I would want to read about rafting. 🙂 Many of the women highlighted in this book paved the way for future female guides such as myself. You gotta respect them for that. Not to mention they have some spectacular tales of whitewater adventure, told in ways that made me feel like I was sitting around a campfire next to the river.

Okay, I have to admit I haven’t started this book yet, but it’s right there on the top of my dresser. I believe in the power of nature to heal, and it sounds like that’s exactly what hiking the Pacific Crest Trail did for author Cheryl Strayed. It’s a dream of mine to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, only further exasperated when I interviewed uber-hiker Liz Thomas. I know I’ll enjoy this book as so many others have.

By far the best book I’ve read in 2013. Those in the river community are familiar with the epic summer of 1983 in the Grand Canyon. The Colorado river was running at record highs due to a series of  “super storms” and the Glen Canyon Dam was on the verge of failure. Author and fellow river guide Kevin Fedarko tells the tale of a trio of river guides who decide to test their strength and skill by running a dory down the Colorado river close to the apex of when the water was its’ highest. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
