Does the idea of welcoming the new year with a massive hangover and ringing ears appeal about as much to you as it does to me? Don’t get me wrong, I love to get my groove thang on and party all night long at a wild, loud, new years bash. But between me and you…I’d prefer participating in one of these other options listed below. (Who knows, maybe you will too!)
1. First Night 2012.
This even is held in many cities such as Boston, Pittsburgh, Tacoma and Hartford. They feature local arts and music in an outdoor setting. Family-friendly, I can remember attending First Night Boston as a teenager, and it was a blast. Ice sculptures, improv troupes and loads of interactive art make it a great way to celebrate the new year. Each city puts its’ own unique spin on First Night, and I highly suggest checking your local calendar of events to see if there’s one nearby.
2. Watch the fireworks.
What’s new years without fireworks? If you live in a city, take an evening stroll on December 31 to a nearby viewpoint, and enjoy the show. Watching fireworks on television doesn’t compare to the real thing. The loud crack of the fireworks exploding, the colors splashed in the sky, the cold air stinging your cheeks, the city lights illuminated in the background; I swear it’s almost magical.
3. Participate in a Polar Bear Plunge!
Welcome 2012 with a plunge! Join others on new year’s day as they jump into a frigid lake. Sure, you’ll be freezing, but the feeling will pass. What will remain is how you and your fellow jumpers kick started the new year. Seattle will be hosting the tenth annual Polar Bear Plunge at Point Defiance Park this new years day. Go for it, I dare you!
