As summer creeps onto the weatherman’s report in Tasmania, I lose my sense of December. Back home (South Dakota) there are snowstorms and hot apple cider, hand-chopped Christmas trees and garlands in every window. Here, there are backyard bbqs and mimosas on the beach. Santa Claus wears flip flops and surf shorts.
I’m homesick for my traditional Christmas season. But, as these holiday quotes remind me, the holidays are about people and memories, not places. May the words below bring you comfort and cheer, wherever you celebrate:
– Celebration is a kind of food we all need in our lives, and each individual brings a special recipe or offering, so that together we will make a great feast. Celebration is a human need that we must not, and can not, deny. It is richer and fuller when many work and then celebrate together. – Corita Kent & Jan Steward
– Christmas is a time when you get homesick – even when you’re home. – Carol Nelson
– A good holiday is one spent among people whose notions of time are vaguer than yours. – John B. Priestly
– I love out-of-the-way, rugged places. For me, holidays are about the experiences, and the people, and the memories, rather than sitting on a nice beach getting tanned. I try to plant myself where I am and embrace what is there in front of me. – Evelyn Glennie
– Celebrate what you want to see more of. – Tom Peters
– Perhaps the best yuletide decoration is being wreathed in smiles. – Anonymous
– More and more people each year are going abroad for Christmas… Fed up with the fact that commercial Christmas starts in October. Fed up with carols. Dreading the arrival of Christmas cards from people they have forgotten to send a card to. Unable to bear yet another family get-together with Auntie Mary puking up in the corner after sampling too much of the punch. You see in the airports the triumphant glitter in the eyes of people who are leaving it all behind, including the hundredth rerun of Miracle on 34th Street. – M.C. Beaton
– At Christmas, tea is compulsory. Relatives are optional. – Robert Godden
– Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love. – Hamilton Wright Mabie
– I prefer just being with people I like. That’s my way of celebrating. – Michael Jackson
– It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace. – Agnes M. Pharo
– Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childhood days, recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, and transport the traveler back to his own fireside and quiet home! – Charles Dickens
