“Everything always seems to fall together for us,” Hadyn muses, as we wander along Sydney’s Darling Harbor.
“No,” I object. “Everything falls apart disastrously, and then it seems to come back together.”
My boyfriend is referring to the rush of last-minute decisions that led us here. 24 hours earlier, we accepted a job in Australia, booked a flight from New Zealand, threw together our bags and hit up friends and family in Sydney for couch space.
However, 24 hours before you land in the country’s largest city is not a good time to find out you have no friends and family to crash with. So, as we’d desperately done before, Hadyn and I turned to Wotif.com‘s Mystery Deal.
This is a selection of hotels selling rooms online for an extremely discounted price. Wotif.com shares the rooms’ location and amenities, but it doesn’t name the secret place until you’ve paid for a night.
In our most recent instance, booking a Wotif Mystery Deal may get you:
- A room in Sydney’s Central Business District on a busy Friday night.
- A location just ten minutes’ walk from the city’s most famous attractions.
- All the free tea, coffee, shampoo and cable television a broke girl could want.
- A surprise appearance by Angelina Jolie.
That’s right. As if our window view of World Square, Sydney – around the corner from Chinatown’s delicious street eats and Pitt Street’s bargain shopping – were not benefit enough, we discovered that Angelina Joli was filming movie scenes just two blocks away.
Though we were unable to see the international star, I marveled at the random circumstances that had led to our unintentional stay here. It seemed like a sign from the Universe: allow a little more mystery into your life.
