Our boat arrived at Cayo Zapatilla around mid-day. We set off from the Dolphin Bay Hideaway with a couple of rewarding snorkel stops along the way. Chilled from my swim, a walk in the sunshine along the sparkling sands would provide me with some warmth and beach finds.
More treats from the sea were in store for me. Enormous Conch shells were positioned, imbedded or framed, naturally placed still lives were noticed. I was greeted with contrasts of man-made barriers of piles of rocks and shells secured in place with chicken wire, and conch shells intertwined in the roots of fallen coconut trees.
Bits of seaweed peek out from a missing piece of shell, the round forms creating pleasantly flowing lines of positive and negative space. All of my subjects so perfectly placed. My role is simply to notice and frame them.
Living shells scampered across the textured bark as I stared, scurrying for the nearest crack or crevice. Now and then they froze for a Living Shell Still Life. It was a day of discovery in and around Zapatilla Island, underwater and along the Isla’s shores, nature’s living galleries mesmerized me.
