One of the first words I wrote into my shiny new travel journal was balcony. It was at the top of my “photography theme list” – a list of words that I associate with Italy (see the previous post for more information about this visualization exercise). I included the word balcony because I knew it would force me to look up!
One of the simplest ways to immediately improve your photography is to throughly walk around a subject and force yourself to change perspectives. Stoop down! Gaze upwards! Stand on that bench across the street from your subject! Experiment with perspective and camera angles and you photographs will collectively express viewpoints beyond your own height; the world around you will come alive and your images will have more interest.
This simple concrete balcony makes a lovely composition because of the shadows created by the angle of the sun. I snapped it on my way back from the post office in Cesena, a lovely Italian town near the Adriatic coast.
