Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger is a Creepy Halloween Read.
It’s got everything your ghost story needs. Begins with an untimely death? Check! A spirit with unfinished business? Check! Young attractive girl living next to a cemetery? Check! Check! (There are two.) Creepy neighbors? Check! A mysterious motive? Check! A secret past? Check! Yep! it’s got everything you need for a Halloween ghost story. But there’s a twist.
The ghost in Her Fearful Symmetry seems like the least dysfunctional character.
One neighbor is an obsessive-compulsive agoraphobe, another is a stalker. The innocent young girls have a dysfunctional relationship and the cemetery is probably the most beautiful and wholesome setting of the entire book. Put it all together and you know things will go terribly awry.
What Wander-Readers will love:
Her Fearful Symmetry is set in modern London. While it’s not hard to find great stories set in Victorian London, Medieval London, or WWII London, Contemporary London is harder to explore through novels. Her Fearful Symmetry gives the reader a fascinating experience bringing us along on tours, shops, neighborhood parks, and tube-rides. The main characters are from Chicago so we also get short visit to the Lake Forest area north of Chicago.
Of course, the travel highlight of the book is Highgate Cemetery. Her Fearful Symmetry does a lot to make you appreciate the art and culture of cemetery history. It inspired me to take a cemetery tour myself right here in Columbus, Ohio. But that’s a story for another time.
