I’ve gained a little weight recently. No this doesn’t mean I’m suddenly going to go on a health-nut tirade, turn vegan, filtrate this blog with granola, blame food writing (never! I like it here), or anything like that. I’m simply appreciating the challenge of keeping it healthy.
I found myself at the grocery store tonight realizing I needed to make a choice. Though I always try to be conscientiousness, appreciate healthy menu options, love to stay fresh and local when cooking at home, lately I’ve found myself slipping into unhealthy habits. So I’ve now laid before myself a challenge: don’t succumb to the desire for what sounds good in the moment. I’d like to focus a little harder on buying deliberately, looking ahead, utilizing fresh produce, meat, etc. And I’d also like to get over my fear of cooking fish.
In my experience, all things in moderation is the best approach to healthy eating. Unfortunately I tend to have an addictive personality, so if something’s tasting good, I can be perfectly content having the same thing night after night. Breaking routine, but routinely staying healthy is the crux of living and eating healthily.
Have you struggled with keeping your cooking healthy? Any tips or tricks for grocery shopping and planning meals? I’ll share one of my favorite grocery store tips: shop the outside of the store. You do this you avoid all the heavily processed foods in the aisles.
Perhaps the trick is to look to other countries who don’t have cultures of excess. Italy is one of my favorite examples. They enjoy all foods, sweet, savory, full of carbs, salads, wine, coffee, and yet they enjoy all these things in a balanced way. Actually, I think maybe the best thing to do would be to move to Italy. Who’s with me?
